  • A break from the typical blog work

I've been sitting here, trying to come up with a something to post about this week, but the truth is I haven't tried any experiments recently, I've pretty much stuck to the meat & potatoes of regular nutritional foods with my kids. They seem to be enjoying most of what I prepare these days, so there's not as much pressure to dress foods up or dumb them down. Maybe that was a problem in my original design of feeding my kids. I shouldn't be training my kids to be tricked with false promises of good taste, or teach them that it's okay to disaprove of something at first glance. Who knows, maybe I'll start blogging about something a little more creative from now on. I've already thought about blogging about both the weight loss shake and vitamins online, though I guess those aren't hot topics that people will tune in to read about. Anyway, sorry for such a short post. Next month I'll be more entertaining, I swear!

  • Cherry Tomatoes FTW!

My kids are hit or miss with tomatoes. Raw tomatoes? Never. But tomato sauce? They'll eat that on anything.

One of the worst culprits, or kid-averted food is the cherry tomato. It ranks right up there with hard boiled eggs for foods my kids won't touch. This is a big hamper against the caveman diet!

So, I decided to take on the challenge. Make a dish with cherry tomatoes my kids would like. I'd done something recently with hard boiled eggs by making deviled eggs for the kids. It almost worked, but not quite.

The theory is similar for the tomato, I scoop it out and put a fun looking filling in the center and garnish the top. Kids usually get a kick out of ouver d' houers type of foods, so who knows?

I was thinking avocado paste, but I eventually went with asparagus mixed with cream cheese, bacon, a touch of cheddar, and olive oil. I garnished the whole thing with lemon and parsley.

The kids liked them.....or at least the filling. Both my children actually sucked the filling from the tomatoes without eating the tomato itself. Do I call that a success or a failure? I'm not sure.

  • Chicken Curry for the Win!

That's right, my kids LOVE Chicken Curry! Who would have thought? Chicken curry is one of the healthiest "real" dishes I know how to make. It's basically chicken, vegetables, and spices, all mixed together in a walk, but here's a little breakdown:

2lb Chicken thighs (boneless, skinless. I made the mistake of getting them with the bones the first time I made it, took me forever to debone the chicken)

    1 Onion

    6 Tomatoes

    1 1/2 Packets Frozen Spinach.

    1.5 Tablespoons Olive Oil

Spices: Cinnamon, Curry, Cloves, Cardamom, Coriander, Red Chili Pepper, Salt, Cumin.

First grill the onions, then add the tomatoes and the spices, then add the chicken, finally add the spinach, and whalah! Chicken Curry!

The recipe makes about eight servings. My kids usually have a serving each and I eat two servings, so it makes enough for two meals. And the great thing is, it works even better as leftovers (chili is the same way). I'd suggest putting a dollop of sour cream on top of the dish two make it a little creamy, but otherwise it's a great, healthy dinner for kids and parents alike.

As an aside, my son asked me the other day how to get washboard abs. How do I answer that? Of course, washboard abs are great, but for kids? I told him to play hard and study in school, that was how.

Also, I found a couple cool websites for the healthsters out there. The Damage Control Master Formula page has a great post on how to deal with stress. Also, check out the vitamin shoppe for all your vitamin needs.

  • The Organic Pop Tart!

That's right, it's an organic pop tart, and I found it at the grocery store!

Organic is a grey zone in my healthy book, I'm never quite convinced that just because something is organic, it is actually healthier than its alternative.

And certainly this pop tart (frosted toaster pastry, technically) has as much sugar as its Kellogg's equivalent. The first three ingredients are flour, sugar, and brown sugar...so...you get the idea.

Nevertheless, in an effort to teach my kids that "organic" doesn't mean "yucky," I served them the organic pop tarts.

The irony hear, is while my children have eaten some of the strangest, low calorie health foods I've whipped up, and asked for seconds with a smile, they didn't particularly care for the pop tarts. I'll be darned if there wasn't a best antioxidant in these "pomegranate pastries." My kids just weren't that into them. I'm mildly relieved.

So, that's how to relieve stress for this week. Don't bother with the organic pop tarts.

  • Spirulina and the People Search Now

Unrelated to health websites, but pretty useful if you're trying to find your long lost high school prom date-- I found a website called people search now, or find people, or something like that. Basically, it looks up every person under a specific name, address, phone number, etc. that is located in public documents or records. A nifty little site.

Anyway, This week I tried the Spirulina with my kids. I called it a "green milkshake." Boy was that the wrong idea. Neither kid would touch the shake.

I do have to admit is smelled funny and it tasted worse. I don't blame them for turning their noses up, in fact I turned my nose up after a sip or two, and we poured both green milkshakes right down the drain.

Next month, I'll think of something better, I promise!
